Because osteoporosis is a systemic disease, it is not possible to spot-treat the spine. The best way to prevent spinal osteoporosis and vertebral fractures is to prevent general osteoporosis through nutrition and performing weight-bearing exercises.
Nutrition
By eating a varied diet rich in whole foods, patients are likely to consume the nutrients they need to promote general health and strong bones.
Exercise
Patients who perform weight-bearing exercises may not only improve their strength, flexibility, stamina, and balance, but will help their body strengthen bones.
Medical treatment
Some patients will need medication in addition to exercise and diet. There are numerous options available to patients, who are encouraged to consult with a doctor on a treatment plan.

Treating Vertebral Fractures
Vertebral fractures do not always require medical care. Many will heal on their own in approximately six weeks, although a dull ache may persist in the affected vertebrae. Some patients may elect to wear a brace that supports good posture while the vertebra heals. Alternatively, kyphoplasty, and vertebroplasty are two out-patient surgeries that can restore height, decrease pain, and may help prevent future fractures.
